County Executive John R. Leopold has kicked off the bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812 by displaying commemorative graphic panels in the lobby of the Arundel Center.

“Our region and our State played a critical role in the War of 1812 and the adoption of the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem,” County Executive Leopold said. “We are pleased to join the celebration of this pivotal point in history.”

The exhibit “War of 1812: Forging a Nation” was acquired for a limited time by the Anne Arundel County War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission from the National Museum of the United States Navy. It covers the history of the sea services of the United States and will be featured at nearly 200 locations across the United States and Canada.

The War of 1812 signified the rebirth of our Navy and established many of the Navy’s traditions and heritage. The Navy’s remarkable string
of successes during the War of 1812 led Congress to fund the only post-war expansion of the Navy in U.S. history and inspired the first Naval school in Annapolis in 1845, now known as the United States Naval Academy.

County Executive Leopold and Anne Arundel County War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission will hold a special commemoration event at the Twin Oaks manor in Linthi*****, Maryland on Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The location was the home of Congressman John Charles Linthi*****, who sponsored legislation to designate the national anthem.
